Seasonal Disconnects

Overview

Effective November 1, 2024, Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) will charge for utility service disconnects considered to be seasonal. A seasonal disconnect is defined as a customer requested service shut off for services not in use, but to be reconnected within 12 months for the same customer or address.

Seasonal Disconnect Fees:

  • Customers will pay a $125 seasonal disconnect fee upon scheduling the shutoff. All applicable meter charges will continue to be billed monthly while service is off and will be payable monthly
  • Customers will also pay a $125 seasonal reconnect fee upon scheduling the turn on; all fees must be paid prior to scheduling work

Exceptions from this fee:

  • Meters shut off due to an emergency or extreme event, i.e., a burst pipe or gas emergency
  • New customers connecting a service that was off under the previous customer

Why does NPU charge for this service?

Any NPU meter in the field is read and maintained each month, regardless of it being on or off. Our Service Fees recover a portion of the costs incurred to send out a truck as well as the associated labor costs for technicians and Customer Service staff at NPU.

Billing rates are calculated with the expectation that all meters in the field will be billed monthly.
