Fall Water Main Flushing Schedule

Clean, clear, and healthy drinking water is vital to our community. That’s why Norwich Public Utilities (NPU) carefully monitors and conducts routine maintenance on its water distribution system.

Water main flushing is an effective method of improving the appearance of drinking water. It also serves as a way to check hydrants to make sure they are in good working order for fire emergency use.

Sometimes water main flushing can cause a temporary reduction in water pressure or discolored water. While not pleasing to look at, be assured that according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this discolored water is never a public health threat. If you experience dirty water, flush your internal piping by opening your cold-water tap. Allow it to run until the water clears up (approximately 5 to 10 minutes).

If you have any questions about the water main flushing, please contact NPU at 887-2555 or communitymatters@npumail.com.

Gas Main Construction

A natural gas main is a large pipe buried underneath the road. These mains carry natural gas throughout the city to wherever service is available. In contrast, a gas service line is a smaller pipe that connects from the gas main in the street to your property.

Periodic replacement of these mains and service lines ensure the safety and reliability of NPU's natural gas distribution system. Natural gas main construction and replacement requires the excavation of roads and the installation of new pipe. This means that during construction, one lane of a road that is affected by construction will be closed.

Road Excavation and Lane Closures
In addition to local traffic delays, driving on local roads may be less than optimal. When the construction project is completed, the affected road will be leveled and permanent curb-to-curb paving will be done.

Gas Service Disruptions
When the gas service line to your home is being replaced, it will be necessary for NPU to interrupt your natural gas service. Usually, this type of interruption lasts only a few hours. Once the new line is installed and connected to your meter, NPU personnel will relight all your gas appliances at your convenience.

Lawn/Sidewalk Excavation
Replacing your property's gas service line may result in some disruption to your lawn or sidewalk. When work is completed, your sidewalk will be repaired and your lawn reseeded.

Construction Times
NPU construction and maintenance crews generally work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

There are a number of factors that may influence construction dates and hours specified, including utility emergencies and weather. Please be patient. NPU employees take great pride in their work. Be assured that we will not only work as efficiently as possible, but take into consideration the quality, safety and service reliability of the work we perform.

Construction Dates
Before construction begins, affected areas and dates are listed below:

Date Location
Friday, July 15 through Sept. 15 Hickory St.

If you have any questions about gas main or service line construction, please contact NPU at 887-2555 or communitymatters@npumail.com.

Tree Trimming Projects

Trees that can or do overlap power lines must be cut back in anticipation of growth that will affect electric service reliability. Tree trimming is handled by certified arborists who use a variety of tree-trimming techniques. Below are illustrations of some techniques you may see used in your neighborhood:

Tree trimming requires the use of bucket trucks, which must be positioned at the correct height and distance to properly trim each tree. Sometimes this will cause minor traffic disruptions or lane closures. If so, flaggers will be present to direct traffic.

Maintenance Times
NPU crews generally work between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

There are a number of factors that may influence dates and hours specified, including utility emergencies and weather. Please be patient. NPU employees take great pride in their work.
